When people think of security, they tend to think of alarms and locks, but it is possible to improve your security in a more natural way. By making some simple change to your landscaping it is possible to actually add an extra layer of security to your house.
Burglars do not usually invade any property, but instead look for homes that they think can be easily compromised by just disabling the security system. Because landscaping is done for beauty and not for security, a well adorned lawn and backyard will not arouse a suspicion that there are security devices in it.
A burglar will often assess the available hiding spaces on a property. A perfect example would be tall hedges – from behind a tall hedge they can conduct their covert surveillance and lay in wait for the right moment to make their entry.
If you have such hedges on your property, it might be a good idea to pull out the trimmer and cut them down a bit. It is a balancing act here between maintaining your privacy, and reducing the attractiveness of your property as a potential target.
You can also install motion sensor devices in these hedges. This will let you be aware if there is someone hiding in the hedges. The hedge can camouflage the security device making it hard to be seen and avoid by burglars.
It is best to have plants near your window. This can hide the magnet sensors and glass break sensors preventing burglars from tampering them. However, do not let the plants grow tall enough that it can block the view of your window.
For two stored houses, see to it that there are no possible entry points in the second floor. Trees that are near windows and verandas can be used as a ladder for burglars. It is best to prune the tree branches that are near the house.
You may also want to use the tree as an installation point for a wireless camera. Not only will it be well hidden in the tree, it will provide you with a nice high vantage point to monitor your entire yard.
